RCASoCal Year in Review

By RCASoCal.

2018 was a busy year with many opportunities to learn, grow, and network.

Educational opportunities

We started 2018 with our January Membership Meeting, Workplace Cannabis: What Employers and Employees Need to Know, on January 30. We were joined by Raza Lawrence, Margolin & Lawrence, Attorneys at Law, who discussed how the workplace will be affected by cannabis laws. Kirk Herold, VP, Safety Compliance Inc., also presented a safety update on the same topic.

In February we offered a webinar Communication of Silica Hazards to Workers and Results of Objective Data Tests, hosted by the Roofing Contractors Association of California. This webinar was an opportunity for members to learn how the requirements impact operations, and how to train workers on crystalline silica hazards.

We presented our next Membership Meeting in April, Sexual Harassment in the Workplace. Kirk Herold, Vice President, Safety Compliance Co., discussed general awareness of sexual harassment programs and the importance of complying with California AB 1825 and 2053, the requirements for Supervisors training.

Also in April, members had the opportunity to attend 2018 RCAC Southern California Safety Day, hosted by the Roofing Contractors Association of California. The event was an opportunity for employee training and education on a variety of critical safety issues, including roofing safety, heat illness, safe driving procedures and more.

In May, we offered the webinar Internet Marketing Strategies for Your Roofing Business, hosted by the Roofing Contractors Association of California. Presented by Zeb Welborn of Welborn Media, this webinar explored marketing strategies and concepts important to optimizing your online presence.

Trade Show and Dinner Meeting

Our 2018 July Trade Show & Dinner Meeting took place on July 31 at Old Ranch Country Club, with local agency representatives from the California Highway Patrol, Cal OSHA, Los Angeles & Orange County Building Department, City of Long Beach, and Contractors State License Board in attendance.

On Tuesday, September 11, we held our major event of the year: Our 29th Annual Jim Nienow Golf Tournament at Oak Creek Golf Club! It was another successful, sold-out tournament, with $27,000 being awarded to 22 students!

Giving Back: 2018 Project Reroof

This year’s recipient of our 2018 Project Reroof was First Southern Baptist Church.

The church’s congregation primarily consists of homeless persons. They offer a number of services geared towards helping those in need get back on their feet by providing shelter, food boxes, clothing, hot showers and two wholesome meals daily for upwards of fifty people.

This year’s project managers were Dave Chapman and James Simmons, Chapman Coast Roof.

In memory of staff member Rebecca Keely

We were tremendously saddened to lose our beloved staff member Rebecca “Becky” Keeley this year. Becky was a huge part of our association. She loved working with RCASoCal and was always eager to help with our activities.
Our association contributed $5,000 to the family of Becky.
Read all about Becky’s work for our association.

 Other 2018 Benefits

We offered special deals, perks and promotions this year, like a 10% discount on all Roofmaster Safety Products from South Coast Shingle, a special 2018 Southern California Roofing Expo promotion, and the OMG Pick Six Challenge.

Throughout the year we circulated our RCASoCal Newsletter with important industry news, employer and business-related information, and articles on topics such as new immigration laws, opioids and safety, as well as association and member news.
