At the end of every construction project, whether successful or not, there’s often the task of completing a construction checklist, also known as a punch list. A punch list is best described as a comprehensive checklist prepared near the completion of a construction project, listing tasks and items that do not conform to contract specifications; signifying what needs to be done before final payment.

A well-documented punch list is a powerful tool in wrapping up a construction project. More importantly, having clear and concise punch list items serves as a collaboration platform between the variety of project stakeholders, including contractors, staff, subcontractors and clients.

When creating a punch list, there are several key areas of a project that you want to have a checklist of to essentially ‘check off’ as quality and complete. But, where do you start? Common Punch List Checklist Items For Easy Reference

 Plumbing:

  • Hot and cold settings are correct
  • Faucet works and runs
  • Bathtubs and showers work
  • Fix any drain and supply line leaks
  • Toilets run
  • Sink stoppers work

 Electrical:

  • Breaker correctly labeled
  • Fixtures are correct color
  • Install light bulbs
  • Switches work with proper polarity
  • Receptacles tested and working
  • Sockets free of paint
  • All switches, receptacles and covers are correct color

 Walls & Ceilings:

  • Drywall patching
  • Walls are flat
  • Free and clear of paint, dust and debris
  • Paint touch up

 Appliances:

  • Garbage disposal working properly
  • Refrigerator is on and cold
  • Dishwasher hooked up to water and working
  • Oven and stove have gas/power and turned on

 Windows:

  • Free and clear of paint, dust and debris
  • Window caulking
  • Windows lock and unlock
  • Windows open and close smoothly

 Floors:

  • Carpet has no warping
  • Grout touch-up on tile
  • Sweep, mop, dust, vacuum floors
  • Floors are flat with no squeaking
  • Clear floors of dust and debris

 Entries & Exits:

  • Door opens and closes properly
  • Door hardware adjustments
  • Locks installed and work properly
